Putting long-term thinking where decisions get made

The problem

Workshops change people. Media changes culture. But systemic change requires more - a sustained effort to embed long-term thinking into the institutions, networks and policy processes that shape how society organises itself.

Most decisions about the future are made by a small number of people, in a small number of rooms, over a short number of years. The timeframes are wrong. The voices are too narrow. And the frameworks being used were built for a world that no longer exists.

Why now

We are at an inflection point. The decisions being made now - on energy, technology, work, care, land - will lock in trajectories for decades. The window for influence is open, but not indefinitely.

At the same time, there is growing recognition across government, civil society and academia that long-term thinking needs to be institutionalised - not left to individual leaders or crisis moments.

Our approach

Shared Horizon builds collaborative partnerships across sectors, convenes communities and networks around shared questions about the future, and contributes to wider conversations about long-term societal transformation.

We work with governments and public institutions, universities, foundations, cultural organisations and mission-driven businesses - connecting futures thinking to the places where policy is made and power is held.

Recent engagements include co-organising a parliamentary event to help establish a UK Committee for the Future and contributing to Chatham House's Common Futures Conversations.

The method

We don't advocate for a single vision of the future. We advocate for the conditions that make better futures possible - the spaces, tools, processes and institutions that enable long-term, participatory thinking at scale.

We work through partnership - identifying the organisations, communities and conversations that matter, bringing people together around shared questions and building relationships that compound over time. We add Shared Horizon's voice and methodology to wider debates, and connect the local to the systemic.
